Fundamentals of Conflict Resolution

Workshop Objective

To equip participants with the skills to navigate high-stakes, emotionally charged conversations with honesty and respect — replacing avoidance and defensiveness with open dialogue, shared understanding, and committed action.

Overview

Participants will learn to recognize when a conversation becomes crucial and identify their own default patterns of silence or violence under stress. They will practice creating conditions of mutual purpose and mutual respect so that all parties feel safe enough to speak candidly. The workshop will train participants to separate facts from the stories they tell themselves, reducing reactive emotions and enabling more intentional responses. Participants will develop the ability to share their perspectives persuasively rather than abrasively using the STATE method, while also learning to actively explore and validate others' viewpoints. Finally, participants will learn to convert dialogue into clear decisions with assigned accountability, ensuring that conversations end with action rather than ambiguity, helping create a culture where people feel valued and included.

Learning Takeaways

  • Clarify what you truly want — for yourself, for the other person, and for the relationship. This prevents your motives from degenerating under stress and keeps you anchored in your real purpose rather than your momentary emotion.

  • Safety first — Learn to watch for the conditions of the conversation — not just the content — and restore safety by establishing mutual purpose and mutual respect before continuing.

  • Master your stories in order to master your emotions. Emotions do not come from events directly — they come from the stories you tell yourself about those events. Retrace your path from action to feeling to story to fact, and challenge the narratives that turn colleagues into villains and yourself into a victim.

  • Speak persuasively, not abrasively — and then listen. Use the STATE* method (Share facts, Tell your story, Ask for others' paths, Talk tentatively, Encourage testing) to express your view without provoking defensiveness. Then use the AMPP listening tools (Ask, Mirror, Paraphrase, Prime) to help others retrace their own path to action and rejoin the dialogue

  • End with action, not just agreement. Make a decision. Make use of the time spent in dialogue. Dialogue without a decision is a waste of time. Assign who does what by when, and document the commitment. Not following through will undo even the most successful conversations.
